In 1867 the discovery of gold near the Mary River saw the establishment of the township of Gympie to service the miners who arrived in droves as the gold rush occurred. Today visitors to the region can still visit the site and try their luck in the gold-bearing gully known as Deep Creek in the heart of the township. A Fossicking Licence is required which can be obtain from the Lake Alford Visitor Information Centre you can also hire from them pans, picks and shovels. A great family activity and very little cost.
